Let's face it, everyone has a budget. Quilting can be as simple as a meander - a flowing, wiggly line that moves in all directions without crossing over itself. The main purpose to hold the top, batting, and backing together and adds a background aesthetic to your finished quilt. It can also be as dramatic as micro quilting - use of tiny dense stitches to fill the empty background area of the quilt. The least amount of time spent quilting (meander) will generally be the less expensive route to go.
Meandering can consist of just curved lines, or it can be curved lines with hearts, flowers, etc. added for a little more drama. The time spent using the meander is dependent on the size of your quilt, if you want a little more drama, or thread color changes. Ex: A 36" x 36" quilt top with a simple meander will take about an hour to quilt. Add hearts or flowers to the meander and add 30 minutes.
It's all about complexity of the quilting. I always say, if you want someone to cuddle the quilt, allow the quilt to flow and wrap, meander is a good place to start.
